Pantone has announced the 2019 color of the year as Living Color, classifying it as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”
Our team of landscape experts has offered some suggestions on both annuals and perennials you can incorporate into your home gardens to help energize and enliven your outdoor space - all while staying on trend! Are you ready to have the most life-affirming garden on the block?
Then let’s dive right in!
Our first recommendation is a unique annual that prefers warm weather and full sun! Salmon Queen Zinnia offers a unique coral color and produces a bloom up to four inches across. They are sure to bring full, bright, and warm hues to your home garden. Just make sure to feed with a light application of fertilizer a month after transplanting and every 4-6 weeks after to keep these beauties strong and healthy!
Our next recommendation hails from Brazil and is perfect as an ideal filler plant or to be used in rock gardens. The Moss Rose brings an heirloom look to your flower garden and because it is drought-tolerant can be located next to sidewalks or pavements. Mass-planting a single color of moss rose will be a sure show stopper because of their brilliant color!
A question many gardeners may ask is what kind of plant can be placed in the shade? The answer? Coral Bells, of course! A well-drained bed that is rich in minerals in part shade will create a solid environment for these stunning plants to take shape. These perennials are known for their striking foliage and offer unique texture to outdoor space.
Let’s take it to the top with the beautiful and vibrant Trumpet Vine! This striking vertical climber is perfect for a picket fence in a cottage garden or for a more energetic and tropical theme. This vine is both drought and humid tolerant and will sustain brutal heat and humidity. As a bonus, these vines are also favorites of red-throated hummingbirds - truly bringing your outdoor space to life!
While living coral is truly the color of the year, a pupil of the color wheel knows complimentary colors are incredibly important to creating a confident design! Coral is complementary to light blues and violets so get creative and weave in bold color choices!
