At RCI, we take immense pride in our contributions to the Louisiana State University (LSU) Student Recreation Center (UREC) expansion, particularly in enhancing the surrounding infrastructure of its aquatic facilities. Our role in this large-scale project focused on installing key landscaping and hardscaping elements that complement LSU’s existing campus, prioritizing functionality, safety, and aesthetic appeal.

This aquatic enhancement reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and quality craftsmanship, providing LSU students with state-of-the-art recreational facilities that support both fitness and relaxation.

Key Contributions to the UREC Renovation

As part of the UREC renovation, RCI was tasked with installing landscaping and hardscaping elements to enhance the aquatic facilities and create a cohesive, inviting environment. Each feature was carefully crafted to improve both the functionality and visual appeal of the spaces, ensuring LSU students enjoy a world-class recreational water experience.

Lazy River: A Unique LSU Landmark

One of the most iconic additions to LSU’s UREC is the 8,314-square-foot Lazy River, which has quickly become a standout feature of the campus. While the Lazy River itself was designed by Grace Hebert Architects and HOK, RCI contributed by installing the surrounding landscaping and hardscaping, including:

  • Poolside pavers to create a seamless transition between water and lounging areas
  • Perimeter sidewalks for accessibility and smooth flow between different sections of the recreation center
  • Landscaping elements that enhance the aquatic aesthetic and overall student experience

Multi-Lane Lap Pool: Fitness & Training Excellence

The multi-lane lap pool was designed to serve both recreational swimmers and fitness enthusiasts. While RCI was not involved in the direct construction of the pool, our team played a key role in shaping the surrounding environment by:

  • Installing durable, slip-resistant pavers for safety and longevity
  • Enhancing walkways and access points to facilitate smooth transitions between aquatic zones
  • Incorporating visually appealing hardscaping elements to complement the pool area

Pool Deck & Walkways: Blending Safety with Aesthetics

A crucial aspect of any aquatic facility is its surrounding infrastructure. RCI was responsible for installing the pool deck, pavers, and perimeter sidewalks to:

  • Enhance safety with slip-resistant materials
  • Improve accessibility and navigation between recreational areas
  • Provide a polished, professional aesthetic that aligns with LSU’s campus design

Sustainable Landscaping & Hardscaping Practices

To ensure the long-term sustainability and efficiency of LSU’s new aquatic spaces, RCI employed environmentally responsible materials and techniques throughout the project.

Eco-Friendly Hardscaping Materials

In line with LSU’s commitment to sustainability, RCI incorporated:

  • Locally sourced materials to reduce environmental impact
  • Permeable pavers to improve stormwater management and minimize runoff
  • Low-maintenance landscaping solutions that complement the aquatic environment

Enhancing Student Life Through Thoughtful Design

With the completion of these aquatic upgrades, LSU’s UREC now provides a diverse range of water-based recreation options for students. Whether seeking a challenging swim workout or a relaxing place to socialize, the upgraded aquatic facilities cater to all needs.

The addition of the Lazy River, multi-lane lap pool, and upgraded pool deck has:

  • Increased student engagement in wellness and fitness activities
  • Enhanced LSU’s reputation as a leader in campus recreation
  • Created a vibrant, multifunctional space that enriches the overall LSU experience

RCI’s Lasting Impact on LSU’s Campus
