RCI Completes Work On Gretna's Memorial Square

Anna Spring, Marketing Specialist • June 18, 2021

RCI partnered with the City of Gretna, Burk-Kleinpeter Inc, Dana Brown & Associates Inc and more to create a functional and beautiful Memorial Square community space in downtown Gretna. The project, labeled Downtown Drainage Phase 1 by the city, significantly improves the drainage of Downtown Gretna and beautifies the city’s core business district.

At first glance, visitors see a beautifully lush landmark with meeting space, but there is more than meets the eye. The space houses the city’s core drainage infrastructure both below and above ground, capable of storing 33,000 cubic feet of water and the capacity to detain up to 5 inches of rainfall over a 24 hour period. Matthew Martinec with JEDCO simply described it as “a giant sponge with a nice layer of landscaping and beautification.”

Special features of this unique project include:

-landscaping with water tolerant plants and tree species to promote pollutant biofiltration

-5,585 square feet of pervious pavers for vehicular areas

-9,065 square feet of pervious pavers for pedestrian areas

-11 curb extensions with bioretention features to hold water from the street and add true curb appeal

Although the project is complete, Mayor Belinda C. Constant said, “RCI continues to work with us every day ensuring the success of this project moving forward.” RCI looks forward to maintaining the green infrastructure that makes Gretna’s Memorial Square equally functional and beautiful.
